Walk for Planet Peace: Honoring Mahatma Gandhi’s Vision on his 150th Birthday

“Walk for Planet Peace” begins at 10am from the steps of the Cathedral of St Paul – 239 Selby Avenue, St Paul 55102 – to the Capitol Mall. {sponsored by TCNV, MAP (MN Alliance of Peacemakers) and IAM (India Association of MN;) supported by MN350, Veterans for Peace}
Join us on a walk for peace, going from the steps of the St. Paul Cathedral to the State Capitol, honoring the 150th anniversary of Gandhi’s birthday. Capitol Mall program features Fr. John Dear, teacher of nonviolence, Nobel Peace Prize nominee and author of They Will Inherit the Earth and Proclamation of Peace. We will also hear from Deborah Watts, cousin of Emmett Till, who as Co-Founder and President of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, has built a platform to insure that time will always remember Emmett, his legacy and the unjust social conditions that debase humanity. Also included in the program are: Narmala Rajaseker, V Srinivasan, Thandisizwe Jackson-Nisan, Ronisha Moore, Sheila Lamb, Michael Orange, Dean MaGraw, Dr Ajay, Skaria and Rev Nancy Nord Bence. {Rev. James Morris Lawson, American activist and university professor, leading theoretician and tactician of nonviolence within the Civil Rights Movement. During the 1960s, Rev. Lawson served as a mentor to the Nashville Student Movement and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. (Due to health concerns, Rev Lawson is unable to attend.)
Bios of presenters for the program at the Capitol: Fr. John Dear is a longtime activist, lecturer, and author/editor of 30 books, including The Nonviolent Life, Put Down Your Sword and Mohandas Gandhi. He served as the director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. After 9/11, he coordinated chaplains for the Red Cross at the New York Family Assistance Center. He has traveled the war zones of the world, been arrested 75 times for peace, and given thousands of lectures on peace across the country. He was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Deborah Watts was just a toddler in 1955 when her 14-year-old cousin Emmett Till was kidnapped, viciously beaten and murdered after a white woman accused him of whistling and making advances toward her. Watts’ aunt, Mamie Till-Mobley, famously made the decision to hold an open-casket funeral for her son, showcasing the brutal violence of white supremacy to the rest of the world. The injustice of Till’s death — two white men were acquitted of his murder — became a powerful testimony for the Civil Rights Movement. Deborah has built a platform to insure that time will always remember Emmett, his legacy and the unjust social conditions that debase humanity. As the Co-Founder and President of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, Deborah is an award-winning changemaker and public speaker—and in 2017, was an Essence Magazine/Time Inc. Inaugural 100 WOKE Women Honoree. Narmala Rajaseker is one of the leading Saraswathi Veena players in the world. She has plated South Indian Classical art form Carnatic music all around the world. Narmala has received many awards for her excellence in music. She serves as a director on the board of the American Composer’s Forum and is the founder of the “Naadha Rass Center for Music” school. V. Srinivasan is an expert player of drum-Mridangam, a South Indian classical percussion art form. He has accompanied many well-known artists around the world. Thandisizwe Jackson-Nisan, Miss Black Minnesota is an ambassador for Peace for Twin Cities Nonviolent and an Ella Baker Teacher Trainer for the Children’s Defense Fund. She’s also a vegan chef and will have a McVegan pop-up during “10 Days Free from Violence.” She won the title of Miss Black Minnesota for her piece “Black Barbie,” in which she boldly describes her own beauty standards and what it means to be Black and authentic in the U.S. Ronisha Moore is a member of the world-renowned Grammy Award winning Sounds of Blackness. With her compassionate heart, angelic voice and positive attitude, she wishes to inspire the next generation, including her two sons, that they can change the world— and that all things are possible. Sheila Lamb is White Earth Ojibwe and Eastern Band Cherokee—and a mother and grandmother working to stop violence against women and girls. Sheila works with trafficked and at-risk youth and has recently been appointed to the new Minnesota Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Task Force. She has served on various panels including those at the United Nations that addressed the issue of sex trafficking. Sheila is involved in the Legislature to create awareness around these issues. Sheila also serves on the Board of MN350 and serves on the City Council of Cloquet, which incorporates some Reservation land within its boundaries. WE WIN Institute (WE WIN) is a nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to the mission of creating academic and social success for all children. WE WIN provides a safe and nurturing environment for young people and works to increase parental involvement in the lives of their children and in their child’s schools. WE WIN’s program goals are centered on challenging young people to reach their highest potential. Michael Orange has been an activist in social justice, peace, and environmental causes since he returned in 1970 from serving in combat with the Marines in Vietnam, and has been active with Veterans For Peace since 1991. In 2001, he published a memoir of his experiences, Fire in the Hole: A Mortarman in Vietnam. He also teaches a class on the history of the Vietnam War. He regularly performs songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s regularly at the Minnesota Veterans Home. Dean MaGraw: Composer, arranger, guitarist and producer. Dean has fine-tuned his “Heavy Meadow” approach to music from years of performing and recording with some of the finest musicians in the United States, Europe and Japan. Dr. Ajay Skaria is a professor at the Department of History, University of Minnesota. He is the author and editor of many books and publications, including, Unconditional Equality: Gandhi’s Religion of Resistance (2016) and Thinking Friendship with Gandhi (2020-forthcoming). Rev. Nancy Nord Bence is the Executive Director of Protect Minnesota with a background in advocacy, public leadership, community organizing, and fund development. Prior to her ordination as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, she was the executive director of a statewide legislative coalition dedicated to religious freedom and women’s rights. Bence brings a strategic vision and commitment rooted in her firsthand experience with the terrible and lasting effects of gun violence on families and children.

Join Nonviolent Peaceforce, The Advocates for Human Rights, & Plymouth Church Immigrant Welcoming Working Group, in a workshop panel. In America today, asylum seekers and other immigrants are extremely vulnerable to violence inflicted by the U.S. immigration system. This workshop will address how people can provide protection and safeguard human rights for people seeking asylum from Central America and for other vulnerable immigrant communities. Participants will explore:• How the U.S. immigration and asylum system impacts human rights• The capacities they have within themselves to provide protection for civilians facing violence.• How to use nonviolent human rights strategies and tactics to keep vulnerable groups safer and more secure.• What resources and legal statutes are in place to protect people seeking refuge.• How to report human rights violations and seek justice. Participants will tackle different scenarios related to violence within the U.S. immigration system and decide what actions can be taken to provide safety, security, dignity, and human rights for asylum seekers. Two local leaders in the human rights field will be the presenters: Madeline Lohman is a Senior Researcher with The Advocates for Human Rights where she focuses on immigrant rights in Minnesota, and representing Nonviolent Peaceforce will be Thor Wagstrom, a teacher at Metropolitan State University and contributing writer of the manual “Unarmed Civilian Protection: Strengthening Civilian Capacities to Protect Civilians Against Violence.”

Come join your local community for our monthly Peacebuilding Film Series! This event is free and open to the public. This Month’s Feature Film: “Love and Solidarity.” Love and Solidarity is an exploration of nonviolence and organizing through the life and teachings of Rev. James Lawson. Lawson provided crucial strategic guidance while working with Martin Luther King, Jr., in southern freedom struggles and the Memphis sanitation strike of 1968. Moving to Los Angeles in 1974, Lawson continued his nonviolence organizing in multi-racial community and worker coalitions that have helped to remake the LA labor movement. Through interviews and historical documents, acclaimed labor and civil rights historian Michael Honey (“To the Promised Land: Martin Luther King and the Fight for Economic Justice”) and award-winning filmmaker Errol Webber put Lawson’s discourse on nonviolent direct action on the front burner of today’s struggles against economic inequality, racism and violence, and for human rights, peace, and economic justice. The Cedar Cultural Center will kick off its 31st season this fall at the Global Roots Festival taking place September 23-25 2019. Over the last ten years, this signature annual event has offered Twin Cities audiences free, in-depth access to new artistic voices from around the world, fulfilling The Cedar’s mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through global music. “Over the past decade, the Global Roots Festival has established itself as an incredible opportunity to commune with music lovers and experience outstanding live acts from around the world, entirely free. LesFilles De Illighadad Female-led avant rock group Les Filles De Illighadad blends contemporary Tuareg guitar with traditional music from rural Niger called tende. Tende, which takes its name from a drum built from a goat skin stretched across a mortar and pestle, is a communal musical practice led by women full of vocals, handclaps, and percussion. In the 1970’s, tende’s vocal melodies inspired the guitar riffs of Tuareg guitarists in exile, leading to the music of Tinariwen, Bombino, and Mdou Moctar. Kathleen Belew is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Chicago where her teaching and research focus on militarization, violence, racism, and identity in 20th-century America. Her recent book, Bring the War Home, explores white power activism from its roots in the Vietnam War to its collaboration with neo-Nazi, Ku Klux Klan, skinhead, and militia movements. She has been featured on Fresh Air, Weekend Edition, CBS, and the Frontline program Documenting Hate. With the current climate around racial inequity in our society, it is important to increase the civic dialogue and empower community to enact positive change. However, race and implicit bias are often difficult topics to discuss with honesty in our civic spaces. Fight, flight, or freeze emotions, such as shame, anger, denial, distrust, and fear often create barriers for real dialogue, which impede our ability to construct equitable solutions together. “Community Conversations” utilizes a restorative justice circle process to explore race in a way that diminishes these responses and opens one up to the opportunity to reflect on the root causes of our biases. Through this process, each person’s experience becomes the gateway for self-discovery and community awareness. The facilitated process equips individuals to examine their own feelings without judgment and builds empathy to listen deeply and engage others across differences. Through circle dialogue, power dynamics are leveled where each person gets the opportunity to speak from their experiences, and the privilege of listening to the wisdom of others. Peace Jubilee Concert II – featuring the Capri Big Band, Judson Church, 4101 Harriet Avenue, Mpls 55409
The Capri Big Band is a north Minneapolis group based out of the Capri Theater in north Minneapolis. There are 20 plus members in the band. They play great Big Band standards and this year’s concert will feature a jazz version of “Amazing Grace.” There will be a free will offering. This concert is a part of the 10 Days of Non-Violence Celebration which is held at the end of September. The original Peace Jubilee concerts were held in Boston in 1868. It was a 5 day event of concerts held in a special building with thousands in attendance involving a large orchestra and a thousand voice chorus. Even President Grant was in attendance. Since then there have been many “peace jubilee” concerts. This one celebrates Americas music called “Jazz.” This concert is a part of the 10 Days of Non-Violence Celebration which is held at the end of September.

Gichi-gami gathering to stop line 3. Join a broad coalition of organizations on September 28 from 1:00 til 6:30 in Duluth, MN. We will rally, march and gather in a festival on the shores of Gichi-gami (Lake Superior) to send a clear message to the Governor, our state agencies, and our elected representatives: Minnesotans stand together to protect what we love and say STOP Line 3 and other pipelines that threaten our water, climate and communities. Arrange your own transportation or if you are in need of transportation, buses have been arranged from Minneapolis at a cost of $40 or pay what you can.

Join the India Association of Minnesota with the Minnesota Historical Society and the Twin Cities Nonviolent in celebrating the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birthday (October 2, 1869). This program will feature speakers, a short film on Gandhi’s life, a conversation about his legacy, a cultural display, temporary exhibit, and award presentation to the Gandhi 150 student essay winners. Light refreshments will be available beginning at 2 pm, with the program starting at 3 pm in the 3M Auditorium. Event is free, but registration is required. Tickets at mnhs.org/calendar .
